What Was The Neanderthal Diet?

Sometimes, archaeology is funny, like when researchers crush up 50,000-year-old Neanderthal poo to detect its intrinsic colors. Via spectroscopic analysis, fossilized feces (coprolites) have finally revealed the scope of the Neanderthal diet. Scientists examined the poo for special compounds that form when meat or vegetables are digested.

They found that Neanderthals ate lots of big game meat, including reindeer and mammoth. They had plenty of plants to balance out the meat; no gout from eating too much much. Overall, researchers found the Neanderthals ate pretty healthy.
