Blue Tears and the Milky Way

Lapping at rocks along the shore of the Island of Nangan, Taiwan, planet Earth, waves are infused with a subtle blue light in this sea and night skyscape. Composed of a series of long exposures made on April 16 the image captures the faint glow from Noctiluca scintillans. Also known as sea sparkles or blue tears, the marine plankton's bioluminescence is stimulated by wave motion. City lights along the coast of mainland China shine beneath low clouds in the west but stars and the faint Milky Way still fill the night above. Over the horizon the galaxy's central bulge and dark rifts seem to echo the rocks and luminous waves.

Marvel Comics’ ‘All New X-Men’ will reveal – and retcon – Iceman (Bobby Drake) as a gay character. How will fans react? More movie news

I’d be happy about this if they didn’t reveal it by having a straight psychic girl read his mind, out him and then spout biphobic bullshit.

I don’t mind iceman being gay, I mind Jean Grey being a nosy, biphobic bitch and using the term “full gay”, like bisexuality is “half gay, half straight” when it isn’t. It’s a sexuality in itself.

More disgusting is Bendis, a straight man, telling bisexuals that they are being biphobic for calling him out on this. Bisexuals, people who are constantly on the recieving end of biphobia being called biphobic by a heterosexual for calling out his biphobic bullshit.

Do I really need to explain what’s wrong with that?

Congo Monkey Spotted Decades After Species’ Alleged Demise

Welcome back, Bouvier’s red colobus monkey. It’s been a while.

The African primate hasn’t been seen since the 1970s and was assumed to have become extinct.

But, in a statement released late last week, the Wildlife Conservation Society says two primatologists working in the forests of the Republic of Congo were successful in a quest begun in February to confirm reports that Bouvier’s is still out there. They returned with a first-ever snapshot of a mother and infant.

“Our photos are the world’s first and confirm that the species is not extinct,” Lieven Devreese, one of the field researchers, was quoted in the WCS statement as saying.

A group of men who saw a young woman being strangled and punched in her car say they were so angry they had no qualms about chasing the attacker - a man they caught and restrained until police arrived.

The eight Auckland men are now being hailed as heroes after interrupting the attack on the young waitress as she stopped in her car at a set of lights on Great North Rd, New Lynn on Wednesday night.

April 24th 1915: Armenian Genocide begins

On this day in 1915, the mass murder of Armenians by the Turkish government began in the Ottoman Empire with the mass arrest of hundreds of Armenian intellectuals. The Ottoman leadership, who were Muslim, had long subjected the Armenian Christian minority to discriminatory treatment, including unequal taxation. The Armenian community still thrived economically, to the chagrin of Ottomans, who also feared that they plotted with European Christian governments. Tensions between the communities remained high into the twentieth century, as Armenian campaigns for basic civil rights were met with sporadic massacres. The Armenians found no relief with the reformist ‘Young Turk’ government and the onset of World War One. On April 24th 1915, fearing that Armenians would ally with their wartime enemies, the Turkish government arrested and ultimately executed around two hundred Armenian intellectuals in Constantinople. After this, a campaign was launched against Armenian citizens, who were rounded up and marched into the desert. Hundreds died on the journey, and thousands more were systematically executed by ‘killing squads’ or perished in concentration camps. The violence also extended into efforts at cultural extermination, kidnapping Armenian women and children and enslaving them or sending them to Turkish families. The massacres continued until 1923, at which time there were under 400,000 Armenians remaining in the Ottoman Empire. Numbers of victims are unclear, but it is estimated that over one million people were massacred between 1915 and 1923. One hundred years on, the event remains immensely controversial. It is widely considered a systematic genocide - and even led to the coinage of the word ‘genocide’ by Raphael Lemkin in 1943 - but the Turkish authorities continue to deny the scale of the violence.

sciencesoup:

The Blue Dilemma

The Sun’s light is incredibly influential in our lives. Aside from providing almost all of our energy, it has another effect: our bodies use light intensity as a cue for our internal body clock. Being exposed to bright light in the morning helps our bodies to wake up and become energised, while the dimmer light at night-time tells our bodies to start winding down and sleep. Receiving the right amount of light at the right times of the day is critical for our wellbeing, because it helps regulate our alertness, our mood, our productivity and our sleep patterns.

Our daily cycle is largely controlled by a hormone called melatonin, which is produced by the brain at night, in the dark. People who don’t produce enough of this hormone take longer to fall asleep. Bright light suppresses its production, so when we’re exposed to bright light at night—like a TV or computer screen—this can decrease our levels of melatonin and mess up regular sleep patterns.

Clearly, the answer isn’t to revert to medieval times and go to bed at dusk; we can find ways to cope. See, the extent of our body’s response to light depends on a few of things: how bright the light is, how far the screen is from our eyes, and what colour is being emitted. Crucially, not all colours have the same effect on your body. Blue is the most disruptive wavelength, because it’s the most powerful in decreasing melatonin levels. Blue wavelengths suppress melatonin for almost twice as long as green wavelengths.

That’s a bit of an issue, because most screens are backlit by blue light.

So, what can you do? Well, you could avoid looking at screens for a couple of hours before bed, but let’s be real, that’s not going to happen. For a lot of people (including me), computers are the tool of their trade and they have to work on them until late. Instead, you could dim the brightness of your screen, or you could find a way to filter out the blue wavelengths.

A couple of years ago, a friend clued me into this neat little program called f.lux. It adjusts the colour of your screen to become progressively yellower as the sun sets, so in the hours before you go to sleep, you’re exposed to less and less blue light. I’ve been using it for about three years and it’s really helped—you can download it here if you want to try it out!
