Genetic variation of stress hormone receptor may affect vulnerability to major depression

neurosciencestuff:

Scientists are beginning to unwrap the biology behind why some people are more prone to major depression and other psychiatric disorders than others when experiencing stressful life events. The researchers found that cellular activity in response to stress hormone receptor activation differs from individual to individual. The study, led by Janine Arloth, Ryan Bogdan, and Elisabeth Binder at the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry in Germany, also shows that the genetic variations underlying this difference in stress response correlate with dysfunction in the amygdala, a brain region that is an important part of the stress hormone response. Link between schizophrenia and individual variations in GABA and glutamate transmission grows stronger

New evidence suggests that schizophrenics possess mutations affecting genes associated with GABA, a neurotransmitter that relaxes nervous system activity. The analysis, which included the largest sample size to date – comparing the genes of 11,500 people with schizophrenia to 16,500 people without the disorder – also replicated and expanded upon previous research implicating schizophrenia with genes related to the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate. Neuroscientists Andrew Pocklington, Michael O'Donovan, and Michael Owen of Cardiff University led the study, which did not find significant differences between the two groups in genes unrelated to the central nervous system.

The authors believe that the risk of schizophrenia depends on the total burden of mutations and that no single gene can be blamed for acquiring the disorder. Mutations in genes that can disrupt GABA and glutamate signaling, however, appear more likely than others to be associated with schizophrenia among the most clearly involved.

‘Perturbation of these processes is likely to have a widespread impact on brain function, and only a subset of genetic lesions within these systems may be compatible with a schizophrenia phenotype,’ write the authors. ‘The identification of the mechanisms by which disruption of these processes by genetic mutation leads to psychopathology will doubtless require experimental studies in model systems of high construct validity.’

An argument to pinpoint the GABA receptor as a drug target for neurodevelopmental disorders

Thousands of genes have been linked to neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism and epilepsy, complicating attempts to find any one particular drug or therapy that could help patients. One lead from gene sequencing studies is the revelation that many of the genes associated with these disorders converge on a limited number of functional pathways.

Geneticists Sien Braat and R. Frank Kooy of the University of Antwerp argue that one intriguing commonality between neurodevelopmental disorders is a disturbance in the function of GABA signaling, responsible for preventing too much brain activity. Based on research using drugs targeting GABA signaling to treat fragile X syndrome in animal models, the researchers believe that clinical trials using these drugs (already approved for human use) would be worth pursuing for a wider range of neurodevelopmental disorders.

'Due to the genetic heterogeneity observed, targeted treatment aimed at interference with pathways commonly disturbed in multiple disorders might be the only realistic option,’ write the authors. 'Results of preclinical trials in several [neurodevelopmental] disorders have shown encouraging results and raised hopes for treatment in patients.’

Oração da Serenidade

Deus,Conceda-me a serenidade
assim como fez Jesus, e não como gostaria que ele fosse;
Confiando que o Senhor fará tudo dar certo
Se eu me entregar à Sua vontade;

I would love to know what universe the editorial board of the Wall Street Journal lives in.

Oh wait, it’s this one, it’s just that they’re privileged enough to believe this bullshit.

(photo via @deray on Twitter.)

Since 2007, the Wall Street Journal has been owned by the same people who own and operate Fox News. While the WSJ used to be the top tier in terms of reporting and educated (if conservative leaning, but educated conservative) editorial, upon purchase in 2007, their editorial section immediately became an ultra-right wing GOP talking points section unconcerned with fact, figure or bias - just like Fox News. Today it routinely denies climate change and is often written or contributed to by Fox News editors, hosts, and staff. It’s best to understand that the WSJ is just another NewsCorp propaganda tool now, so when the same song and dance echoes through the halls, remember that it’s because the same people are singing and dancing, and hoping you don’t notice.

Oração a Santo Expedito

Ajuda-me, Dai-me força, coragem, calma e serenidade no momento da prova. Devolva-me a paz e a tranqüilidade. Meu Santo Expedito!

Acredite, dará tudo certo no final.

I got nothing for you, in terms of jokes and sounds. Because of what happened in South Carolina. And maybe if I wasn’t nearing the end of the run, or this wasn’t such a common occurrence, maybe I could’ve pulled out of the spiral, but I didn’t. So I honestly have nothing.

Over 87,000 people are calling for Charleston to remove its Confederate flag

After the massacre in Charleston, South Carolina, left nine black people dead, all the official flags throughout the state flew at half-mast. All but one: the Confederate flag. The symbol of slavery remained full-mast, defiantly flying high at the S.C. State House. Now nearly 100,000 people are fighting back — but sadly, it will take great effort to get it removed.

This is actually true!

“In some places, such as Nri, the royal python, éké, is considered a sacred and tame agent of Ala and a harbinger of good fortune when found in a home. The python is referred to asnne ‘mother’ in areas where the python is revered, it is a symbol of female beauty and gentleness. Killing of the python is expressly forbidden in these places and sanctions are taken against the killer including the funding of expensive human sized burials that are given to slain pythons.” (x)

And more thanks to kaijutegu:

“A public levy is made for giving elaborate burial rites when the python dies from natural causes. Every python has a human soul within it; this must be liberated by ritual after the death of the reptile. Any offence against the snake is an offence against the ancestor.” (x

Night-Shining Clouds

This image of noctilucent clouds is a composite of several Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere (AIM) satellite passes over the Arctic on June 10, 2015. The clouds appear in various shades of light blue to white, depending on the density of the ice particles. The instrument measures albedo—how much light is reflected back to space by the clouds.

Lyme disease

What is Lyme disease?

Lyme disease is an infection caused by a bacteria transmitted through the bite of an infected tick. In Ontario, Lyme disease is spread by the bite of a black-legged tick, commonly known as a deer tick. Most humans are infected through the bite of an immature tick called a nymph. Nymphs are tiny (less than 2 mm) and difficult to see; they feed during the spring and summer months.

Adult ticks are much larger and are more likely to be discovered and removed before they have had time to transmit the bacteria. Adult blacklegged ticks are most active during late summer and fall.
