Meteors and Milky Way over Mount Ranier

Despite appearances, the sky is not falling. Two weeks ago, however, tiny bits of comet dust were. Featured here is the Perseids meteor shower as captured over Mt. Rainier, Washington, USA. The image was created from a two-hour time lapse video, snaring over 20 meteors, including one that brightened dramatically on the image left. Although each meteor train typically lasts less than a second, the camera was able to capture their color progressions as they disintegrated in the Earth's atmosphere. Here an initial green tint may be indicative of small amounts of glowing magnesium atoms that were knocked off the meteor by atoms in the Earth's atmosphere. To cap things off, the central band of our Milky Way Galaxy was simultaneously photographed rising straight up behind the snow-covered peak of Mt. Rainier. Another good meteor shower is expected in mid-November when debris from a different comet intersects Earth as the Leonids.

We will Rock you, do Queen.

Nada vai deixá-la mais preparada do que a música Eye of the Tiger, do filme Rocky!

Se chama Dog days are over e ela é simplesmente incrível!

A música I Gotta Feeling vai fazer você dançar a noite inteira e, quem sabe, conhecer alguém bacana!

Faça como a Kelly Clarkson e cante: What doesn't kill you makes you stronger!

In 1972, archaeologists unearthed a plaster-lined brick bin in the Teppe Hasanlu site in northwestern Iran, an ancient city that had been violently sacked and burned at the end of the 800s BCE. University of Pennsylvania archaeologist Robert Dyson wrote:

Lying in the bottom of the bin were two human skeletons, a male and a female. The male had one of its arms under the shoulder of the female, while the female was looking into the face of the male and reaching out with one hand to touch his lips. Both were young adults. Neither showed any evidence of injury; there were no obvious cuts or broken bones. There were no objects with the skeletons, but under the female’s head was a stone slab. The other contents of the bin consisted of broken pieces of plaster, charcoal, and small pieces of burned brick but nothing heavy enough to crush the bones.

Two theories have been suggested. A pair of lovers might have crawled into the bin under some light material of some kind to hide in the hope of escaping the destruction of the citadel, and they embraced while the city was destroyed around them. Or, the lovers were hiding and one is telling the other not to make any noise. Either way, they died peacefully – probably of asphyxiation.

Injury Deaths Fueled by Drug Misuse

A recent national report reveals that drug overdoses are the leading cause of injury deaths in the United States, at nearly 44,000 per year. These deaths have more than doubled in the past 14 years, and half of them are related to prescription drugs.

The Facts Hurt: A State-By-State Injury Prevention Policy Report,” was issued by the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and is now available online. Corinne Peek-Asa, UI College of Public Health associate dean for research and professor of occupational and environmental health, helped peer review the report and assisted in its public release in June.

Picture from the hoax articles of man-bats (Vespertilio-homo) who live on the moon

John Herschel (1792 - 1871)

August 25th 1835: Great Moon Hoax

On this day in 1835, the New York Sun newspaper began publishing articles about the discovery of life and civilisation on the Moon. The hoax continued across six articles in the paper, which claimed that the discovery was made by the famous astronomer Sir John Herschel. According to the articles, fantastic creatures such as unicorns and winged humans lived on the Moon, and lived in an Earth-like geography, with trees, oceans and beaches and even cities and temples. The winged batlike inhabitants of the Moon were termed ‘Vespertilio-homo’. The story vastly increased sales of the New York Sun, with the hoax not being exposed for several weeks, and even then some still believed it to be true that life had been discovered on the Moon.
