Zeta Oph: Runaway Star

Like a ship plowing through cosmic seas, runaway star Zeta Ophiuchi produces the arcing interstellar bow wave or bow shock seen in this stunning infrared portrait. In the false-color view, bluish Zeta Oph, a star about 20 times more massive than the Sun, lies near the center of the frame, moving toward the left at 24 kilometers per second. Its strong stellar wind precedes it, compressing and heating the dusty interstellar material and shaping the curved shock front. What set this star in motion? Zeta Oph was likely once a member of a binary star system, its companion star was more massive and hence shorter lived. When the companion exploded as a supernova catastrophically losing mass, Zeta Oph was flung out of the system. About 460 light-years away, Zeta Oph is 65,000 times more luminous than the Sun and would be one of the brighter stars in the sky if it weren't surrounded by obscuring dust. The image spans about 1.5 degrees or 12 light-years at the estimated distance of Zeta Ophiuchi.

St. Catherine’s Monastery, at the foot of Mount Sinai in...

St. Catherine’s Monastery, at the foot of Mount Sinai in Egypt, is one of the oldest still-functioning monasteries in the world. It was built between 548 and 565 CE. One reason it has endured is its six-foot-thick granite walls. Another is that the monastery once sheltered and fed Muhammad during his early travels. He gave specific orders that St. Catherine’s was to be left unharmed. Muhammad’s protection was written in a charter in the second year of the Hegira (626 CE) and that charter, called the Ashtiname of Muhammad, was faithfully kept and renewed by later Muslim rulers.

About 1.5 million years ago, a timid herbivore no more than 2 feet tall walked in the forest in North America, grazing on leaves and fruit. It was the eohippus, the ancestor of all modern horses. Its name means “dawn horse.”

Archaeologists Find 22 Shipwrecks Off One Greek Archipelago

Archaeologists Find 22 Shipwrecks Off One Greek Archipelago:

historical-nonfiction:

A joint Greek-American archaeological expedition recently turned up 22 ancient shipwrecks in one 17-square-mile area around the Fourni archipelago in the eastern Aegean. And what was truly amazing? They did this during one short, 14-day surveying permit.

Sirens, definitely sirens.

Sorry, I am confused about how this is definitely sirens. Did the sirens lure archaeologists with promises of what they most desired, shipwrecks? But the problem was, we now have advances to allow us to breathe underwater? So the sirens were useful tour guides, basically?

Or did the sirens lure all 22 ships to their watery graves?

Alternatively, there could be some sort of scientific explaination for this area attracting so many ships then wrecking them that made the Ancient Greeks believe there were sirens?

Or. There were just straight up sirens.
