Pluto in Enhanced Color

Pluto is more colorful than we can see. Color data and images of our Solar System's most famous dwarf planet, taken by the robotic New Horizons spacecraft during its flyby in July, have been digitally combined to give an enhanced view of this ancient world sporting an unexpectedly young surface. The featured enhanced color image is not only esthetically pretty but scientifically useful, making surface regions of differing chemical composition visually distinct. For example, the light-colored heart-shaped Tombaugh Regio on the lower right is clearly shown here to be divisible into two regions that are geologically different, with the leftmost lobe Sputnik Planum also appearing unusually smooth. New Horizons now continues on beyond Pluto, will continue to beam back more images and data, and will soon be directed to change course so that it can fly past asteroid 2014 MU69 in 2019 January.

After 15 Year Battle India Finally Wins The War On Tetanus

A year after seemingly eradicating polio, India has attained another public health success. Following a 15-year crusade, the nation has practically eradicated tetanus as a killer of mothers and newborns. The illness, caused by a bacterium ordinarily found in animal dung and soil, typically…

August 31st 1895: Ely Parker dies

On this day in 1895, Ely S. Parker, the first Native American commissioner of Indian Affairs, died in Connecticut aged sixty-seven. Born Hosanoanda at Indian Falls, an Indian reservation near Akron, New York, he was the son of a Seneca chief. Taking the name Ely Samuel Parker, he studied at a Baptist boarding school and eventually mastered English and became an interpreter, assisting Seneca tribal delegations to Washington DC seeking to regain land titles. He went on to study to be a lawyer, but was denied admittance to the New York state bar as Indians were not classed as citizens of the United States; Parker instead became a civil engineer. At the outbreak of Civil War, Parker struggled to receive an army commission, but eventually joined the war effort on the Union side, quickly climbing the ranks and becoming General Ulysses S. Grant’s military secretary. In this role, Parker drafted the terms of Confederate surrender at Appomattox, where General Robert E. Lee said to Parker “I am glad to see one real American here”, to which Parker replied “We are all Americans.” Parker’s friendship with Grant continued - the general was best man at his wedding - and in 1869 President Grant made Parker Commissioner of Indian Affairs. The first Native American to hold the office, Parker spearheaded Grant’s ‘Peace Policy’, which aimed to end the constant Indian wars and assimilate Native Americans through reservations and boarding schools. However, Parker was accused of corruption and resigned from office. After pursuing a career in business, Ely Parker died in August 1895.

“A son will be born to you who will be distinguished among his nation as a peacemaker…he will be a wise white man, but will never desert his Indian people or lay down his horns as a great Iroquois chief…His sun will rise on Indian land and set on the white man’s land.
- a Seneca dream interpreter to Parker’s mother shortly before his birth

The Maya invented dentistry. But not for teeth health or cleanliness – they were all about aesthetic. Mayan dentists would drill into patients teeth and precisely place gemstones in the cavity. So precisely, in fact, that most skeletons’ teeth still hold their gemstones, a thousand years later. And Mayan dentistry was not just for the wealthy or powerful.  Citizens from all classes had their teeth filled with gemstones!

Ramchandra Kumar stands next to a defunct toilet in his home. He hopes to build a new, usable toilet.

Remnants of never-used toilets in a rural Bihar, India. Images by Ann Schraufnagel. India, 2015.

Is Clean India a Pipe Dream?

“I’m of the lowest caste: Harijan,” Ramchandra Kumar said at his small home in the village of Basbitti in Bihar state’s rural Supaul district. He is a sinewy, soft-spoken man. “I’m very poor. We’re mostly illiterate. We don’t know of the services the government provides because we can’t read the newspapers, we don’t go to the courthouses.”

In the morning, Kumar fills up his lota, the small cup of water with which he cleans himself, and goes to the rice fields in front of his home to defecate—but almost every day, there are women working in the area. He is forced to hold it.

Kumar is one of more than 600 million Indians who defecate in the open every day.

Mary Shelley (1797 - 1851)

August 30th 1797: Mary Shelley born

On this day in 1797, the English novelist Mary Shelley was born in London. Her birth name was Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, and her mother was British women’s rights advocate Mary Wollstonecraft, famed author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. Mary’s mother died a few days after giving birth to her, leaving the infant Mary and her sister to be raised by their father, the philosopher William Godwin. Mary received a good education and went on to marry the Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. The Shelleys famously attended a party at the home of British poet Lord Byron where he challenged each guest - all of whom were authors and poets -  to write a horror story. After gaining inspiration from a dream, Mary Shelley proceeded to write one of the most famous novels of all time - Frankenstein.  Released in 1818, the Gothic novel - which is considered one of the first science-fiction novels - tells the story of scientist Victor Frankenstein’s experiments in reanimation, and explores the nature of humanity. Percy Shelley drowned in 1822 and Mary Shelley died in 1851.

Engaging Decision-makers on Family Planning: Some Right IDEAs

Just a few years ago, progress on global family planning and reproductive health policy seemed to be stuck in a rut. “For 20 years, development money for health had been directed to fight HIV and poverty, and as a result, momentum, interest, and funding for family planning had dwindled,” said Susan Rich, vice president of global partnerships for the Population Reference Bureau (PRB), at the Wilson Center on July 15. “Unmet need for family planning was high all over the world, but especially in Africa.”

But by 2015, the tide had turned. Continue reading at New Security Beat.

M31: The Andromeda Galaxy

What is the nearest major galaxy to our own Milky Way Galaxy? Andromeda. In fact, our Galaxy is thought to look much like Andromeda. Together these two galaxies dominate the Local Group of galaxies. The diffuse light from Andromeda is caused by the hundreds of billions of stars that compose it. The several distinct stars that surround Andromeda's image are actually stars in our Galaxy that are well in front of the background object. Andromeda is frequently referred to as M31 since it is the 31st object on Messier's list of diffuse sky objects. M31 is so distant it takes about two million years for light to reach us from there. Although visible without aid, the above image of M31 is a digital mosaic of 20 frames taken with a small telescope. Much about M31 remains unknown, including exactly how long it will before it collides with our home galaxy.

Osage Warrior (1805–7), a watercolor with pencils by French aristocrat Saint-Mémin. From 1803 to 1810, he worked in the eastern United States as an itinerant artist. He was in the nation’s capital in 1804–6 when delegations of Native Americans whose lands had been acquired by the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase came to Washington to meet President Jefferson and discuss trade relations. Saint-Mémin’s fifteen portraits of native Plainsmen are not only the most ethnographically correct but also the earliest known portraits of these tribes.

What is Environmental Health?Environmental Health is a field...

What is Environmental Health?

Environmental Health is a field of science that studies how the environment influences human health and disease. In other words, Environmental Health professionals protect humans from the hazards in our environment. The “environment” can include the buildings we live in, the places we work as well as the land use around us. Environmental Health professionals study and monitor how these hazards can move through the environment to reach our bodies and cause illness.

Many Environmental Health professionals work in local, state, and federal agencies that protect the public such as health departments, environmental protection and business regulation agencies. Private sector professionals are often employed by businesses to ensure the safety and purity of their employer’s products and services.

Who Invented The Tank?

The invention of the tank is usually credited to Sir Ernest Dunlop Swinton, a British military officer and author. But the real credit might belong to Australian soldier Lance de Mole, who apparently came up with the idea for the tank in December 1914 (although he might have been working on it as early as 1912). He subsequently designed an armored vehicle with chain wheels, allowing for easy steering while traveling off-road and over trenches. De Mole immediately submitted his plans to the British War Office, which rejected them, believing the concept to be impractical. He would present his idea again in 1915 and 1917, only to see it rejected both times, although his third attempt did secure him a grant of £987 to offset his expenses. Swinton would eventually develop his own plans for the tank after seeing a tractor with a gun on it in 1914, though the British Army would not start working with them until 1916. If they had adopted tanks when De Mole first suggested, they might have ended World War I a few years earlier.

The Seagull Nebula

A broad expanse of glowing gas and dust presents a bird-like visage to astronomers from planet Earth, suggesting its popular moniker - The Seagull Nebula. This portrait of the cosmic bird covers a 1.6 degree wide swath across the plane of the Milky Way, near the direction of Sirius, alpha star of the constellation Canis Major. Of course, the region includes objects with other catalog designations: notably NGC 2327, a compact, dusty emission region with an embedded massive star that forms the bird's head (aka the Parrot Nebula, above center). Dominated by the reddish glow of atomic hydrogen, the complex of gas and dust clouds with bright young stars spans over 100 light-years at an estimated 3,800 light-year distance.

August 29th 1957: Thurmond filibuster ends

On this day in 1957, the Democratic Senator from South Carolina, Strom Thurmond, ended the longest filibuster in history. Thurmond was strongly opposed to the proposed 1957 Civil Rights Act, which aimed to protect African-American voting rights. An ardent segregationist, his desire to stop passage of the act led to him conducting a 24 hour, 18 minute long speech during which he read out state election laws, the Declaration of Independence, and even a recipe book. He did not sit down for the whole filibuster, and cots were brought into the Senate chamber for his fellow Senators to sleep. Thurmond began speaking at 8:54 pm on August 28th and continued until 9:12 pm the following evening. Despite his efforts, the bill was passed over his filibuster, marking the first time since the Reconstruction period following the Civil War that Congress passed a piece of civil rights legislation. However, the act was ultimately ineffective in protecting African-American voting rights, and widespread disenfranchisement continued throughout the country. Thurmond continued to oppose the Civil Rights Movement as it gained traction, eventually defecting from the Democratic Party after the party pushed through the landmark 1964 Civil Rights Act. Strom Thurmond left office in 2003 aged 100, making him the oldest-serving and one of the longest-serving members of Congress.

After gaining independence from British Raj, India was to be divided into two separate countries (India and Pakistan). A major population exchange happened with around 25 million people becoming refugees when they tried to relocate. Hindus were fleeing into India, and Muslims were fleeing into Pakistan and what is now Bangladesh. There were religious riots, fanatics attacking groups trying to move, and many more people just taking advantage of the chaos. This is a series of photos by LIFE magazine, chronicling this dark time in the subcontinent’s history.

Puppis A Supernova Remnant

Driven by the explosion of a massive star, supernova remnant Puppis A is blasting into the surrounding interstellar medium about 7,000 light-years away. At that distance, this colorful telescopic field based on broadband and narrowband optical image data is about 60 light-years across. As the supernova remnant expands into its clumpy, non-uniform surroundings, shocked filaments of oxygen atoms glow in green-blue hues. Hydrogen and nitrogen are in red. Light from the initial supernova itself, triggered by the collapse of the massive star's core, would have reached Earth about 3,700 years ago. The Puppis A remnant is actually seen through outlying emission from the closer but more ancient Vela supernova remnant, near the crowded plane of our Milky Way galaxy. Still glowing across the electromagnetic spectrum Puppis A remains one of the brightest sources in the X-ray sky.
