One of Seattle’s wealthiest citizens in the late 1800s was a madame. In the old-fashioned sense of the word. Lou Graham’s brothel made her so rich that she loaned money. She moved on from strictly flesh trade to become something of a wealthy landowner. She died in her forties of syphilis (yes, those stereotypes weren’t all wrong) and Graham’s estate had no heirs. So her fortune went to Seattle’s public school system.

Rains of Terror on Exoplanet HD 189733b

This Halloween, take a tour with NASA's Exoplanet Exploration site of some of the most terrifying destinations in our galaxy. The nightmare world of HD 189733 b is the killer you never see coming. To the human eye, this far-off planet looks bright blue. But any space traveler confusing it with the friendly skies of Earth would be badly mistaken.

We have eight eagle talons which were excavated at the famous Neanderthal site called Krapina, in Croatia. Recent re-examination of the talons suggest they were strung together to make a necklace. If this is true, the talons are the earliest known symbolic Neanderthal artifact, dating to 130,000 years ago. That’s about 50,000 to 80,000 years before Homo Sapiens arrived in the area.

Long time no post

Hi everyone! A few of you have been asking about the blog and when it’ll be back up and running, sorry I’ve taken so long to reply.

I had to take a break from the blog as during summer I was completing my Masters dissertation, and only a few days after submission I went travelling. I’ve been travelling around the United States for 2 months now, taking in lots of museums as I go! I’ll be coming home mid-November, and that’ll be when the posts resume.

Sorry for the unexplained absence, and thanks for sticking around. I promise the daily doses of history will be back soon!
