On Mount Popa, a former volcano, is perched the Taung Kalat monastery. For the Burmese Taung Kalat and Mount Popa are the center of “nat” worship. This is the animistic belief system that is followed alongside their Buddhist beliefs. At Taung Kalat the main thirty-seven spirits of nat are honored and revered.
