July 16th 1951: Catcher in the Rye published

On this day in 1951, the novel The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger was published. Salinger had been working on a story similar to Rye for several years prior to its publication, with protagonist Holden Caulfield first appearing in 1941. The novel is distinctive in its colloquial and train-of-thought writing style, as it follows the rebellious teenager Holden Caulfield in New York City after he has been expelled from school. It was censored at the time for its profanity, sexual references, and diversion from contemporary moral codes. In 1960, a teacher was even fired for assigning the novel to her class, though schools continued to defy censorship and teach Salinger’s book. It remains hugely popular, especially with teenagers, mostly because Caulfield has become an icon of teen rebellion and frustration with adult society. The Catcher of the Rye has sold over 65 million copies and is widely regarded as one of the greatest novels of all time. Salinger, who died in 2010, was reclusive, giving his last interview in 1980, and consistently refusing to grant permission for a film adaptation of The Catcher in the Rye.
