Kenyan author Ngugi wa Thiong’o’ wrote a novel while in prison for political dissent. Because he was under 24-hour-surveillance, he had to write on toilet paper, hidden from his jailors.  Devil on the Cross was published in 1980 after his release, and is today considered a classic.
