In 1970, President Nixon had the White House guards’ uniform redesigned. Nixon had been impressed by palace guard uniforms that other countries had, and Nixon wanted the White House guards to be just as fancy. So he dressed up the Secret Service, including giving them braiding on the shoulders and a jaunty hat on top.

The new look was widely criticized, among other things for being “like a palace guard of toy soldiers.”  Nixon gave in, and the uniforms were eventually sold to the Meriden-Cleghorn High School Marching Band in Iowa.
