The Half-Man -- And No, He Wasn't Born This Way

Blas de Lezo was nicknamed “Mediohombre” or “half-man.” He was a Spanish sailor who eventually became an admiral, a man who fought English and Dutch pirates during the golden age of piracy. And it was pretty clear to anyone who saw him that he had earned his nickname.

de Lezo had lost his lower left leg at the Battle of Velez Malaga in 1704, when he was fifteen. He lost his left eye in the siege of Santa Catharine Castle in 1707, when he was eighteen. As captain of a frigate, while capturing 11 British ships, de Lezo lost his right arm at the siege of Barcelona in 1713, when he was twenty-four. That’s a rate of one body part every five years!
