Czar Alexander III commissioned the first Fabergé egg in 1885, as an Easter present for his beloved wife, Czarina Maria Fedorovna. It is known as the Hen Egg. Crafted with gold, the white enamel shell opens to reveal a yellow-gold yolk, which also opens to reveal a multicolored golden hen, which contains a diamond and a tiny ruby pendant. The empress loved her gift, so much so that Alexander commissioned another egg the next year. Fabergé ended up producing amazing eggs every year except 1904 and 1905, until 1917.

After the Russian Revolution, the Hen Egg was sold abroad, first to England then the United States, before being bought by a Russian and returned in the late 1970s to its original home country. You can see it on display at the Fabergé Museum in St. Petersburg
