New Evidence of an Old Migration

Madagascar, off the African coast and about 3,700 miles from Southeast Asia, is home to Malagasy, an Austronesian language. Because of the language connection, it was long theorized that the island was colonized by peoples from what is today Taiwan, Indonesia, and Malaysia perhaps 1,200 years ago. But there was no physical evidence. Well, that seems to have just changed. Recently excavated botanical remains on the Comoros Islands of Asian crops, including rice and cotton, are the first hard proof. Exciting!
