The original title of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was “Alice’s Adventures Under Ground.” The first, handwritten manuscript was bound and illustrated for young Alice Liddell. In 1926, widowed, Alice sold the manuscript to pay her bills. It was displayed at Columbia University. In 1946 a group of American citizens purchased it and gave the manuscript to Great Britain “…in recognition of Britain’s courage in facing Hitler before American came into the war…” It is now held by the British Library, which has uploaded the entire thing online if you would like to read it!
