The Great British Gender Crisis

Around the mid-1600s in England, it was a widely accepted fact among men that English women sizeably outnumbered English men. There was no statistical evidence this was true. But men believed it anyway. Scholar Thomas Browne went so far as to declare that, because of “the unequal number of both sexes, [polygamy] may also be necessary.”
