The fortress of Kuelap, in northern Peru. It was initially a walled city of the Chachapoyas culture built in the 500s CE. Over 400 buildings are nestled inside the massive exterior stone wall, and the entire city sits on a ridge overlooking the Utcubamba Valley. Kuelap was occupied, radiocarbon dating tells us, until the early colonial period, sometime between 1532-1570, when the city was abandoned.
