Sekigahara – Prelude to War:

One the 21st October, 1600 the eastern armies of Tokugawa Ieyasu and the western forces of Ishida Mitsunari fought for control of Japan on the misty plain s and hills of Sekigahara. It’s no great exaggeration to say that the battle of Sekigahara was one of the most pivotal battles in Japanese history. “Control Gifu and you control Japan”, it was often proclaimed during Japan’s sengoku, or warring states period (c. 1467 – 1603). The then province, now prefecture, appears at the centre of Japan’s main island, charged by geography to serve as the crossroads between east and west.  Sekigahara is a plain in one of Gifu’s many winding valleys.
