February 17th 1801: Jefferson elected President

On this day in 1801, Thomas Jefferson was elected third President of the United States. The results of the 1800 presidential election were contested, as Jefferson won the most Electoral College votes but did not have a majority. Per the Constitution, the issue was turned to the House of the Representatives, who elected Thomas Jefferson President of the United States and Aaron Burr as Vice-President. They therefore defeated President John Adams and his running mate Charles Pinckney. Both Jefferson and Adams were well known figures in the newly independent United States, as both were Founding Fathers; Jefferson famously drafted the 1776 Declaration of Independence from Britain, and Adams served as the first Vice-President under George Washington. After Jefferson was elected, he took the oath of office on March 4th 1801, and served in office until 1809 when he was succeeded by James Madison.
