Graffiti in the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, where it is believed Jesus was buried and was resurrected. When the European crusaders took the city in 1099, illiterate but pious soldiers left their marks on this most holy of churches with crosses. Today these crudely carved crosses are protected, not as graffiti but as evidence of the long history of the church and the crusader time period in particular. It is amazing what being 900 years old will do.
