Australopithecus sediba is a hominin species which lived in southern Africa about two million years ago. It is unusual for its poor ability to bite down on hard foods. Recent biomechanical tests show that if A. sediba bit down with all the force of its chewing muscles, its jaw would dislocate. This is the same as modern humans, but different from other australopithecus. A. sediba were eating softer, easier-to-chew foods, just like modern homo sapiens. The study does not prove A. sediba evolved into modern humans. But it does suggest diet could have played an important role in human evolution.
