The Clouds of Orion the Hunter

Cradled in cosmic dust and glowing hydrogen, stellar nurseries in Orion the Hunter lie at the edge of giant molecular clouds some 1,500 light-years away. Spanning about 30 degrees, this breath-taking vista stretches across the well-known constellation from head to toe (left to right) and beyond. At 1,500 light years away, the Great Orion Nebula is the closest large star forming region, here visible just right and below center. To its left are the Horsehead Nebula, M78, and Orion's belt stars. Sliding your cursor over the picture will also find red giant Betelgeuse at the hunter's shoulder, bright blue Rigel at his foot, the Witch Head Nebula above -- and illuminated by -- Rigel, and the glowing Lambda Orionis (Meissa) nebula on the left, near Orion's head. Of course, the Orion Nebula and bright stars are easy to see with the unaided eye, but dust clouds and emission from the extensive interstellar gas in this nebula-rich complex, are too faint and much harder to record. In this mosaic of broadband telescopic images, additional image data acquired with a narrow hydrogen alpha filter was used to bring out the pervasive tendrils of energized atomic hydrogen gas like in the arc of the giant Barnard's Loop.

Guys, deadbolts aren’t totally safe. This is just one of several ways I’ve seen them opened (via YouTube videos). If you really want to be safe, consider investing in a flip-latch.

You can pick them up at ACE hardware (or any other hardware store), and you install them on the inside of the door on the doorframe. They flip and lock really tight (you typically have to lean your weight into the door to secure it) and they can’t be opened from the outside as far as I know.

Another reason I will never sleep easy in a hotel for the rest of my life.

Hey!

hi.

here’s a way of envisioning large numbers:

start with one grain of rice (about 25 milligrams).

one thousand grains of rice (25g) is a small handful.

one million grains of rice (25kg) is a heavy suitcase full.

one billion grains of rice (25 tonnes) is the weight of a firetruck, maybe a firetruck and a half.

one trillion grains of rice (25,000 tonnes) is the weight of a battleship with a crew of 1,000.

hope this is useful.

regards,

b.

In 1453, the Ottoman Empire was set to be the world’s newest superpower and after conquering all of the Byzantine Empire’s former territory, it had its eyes set on the capital, Constantinople. The year before, a weapons manufacturer by the name of Orban tried to sell the idea of a very, very large cannon to the Byzantine Emperor, Constantine XI. The Emperor wanted the cannons, but simply did not have the money to fund them. Eventually, destitute Orban left Constantinople and sold the idea to the highest bidder, the Ottoman Empire. They had money, and built Orban’s giant cannons. The result was a 27 feet long monster, with barrel walls 8 inches thick and of solid bronze. The cannon mouth had a diameter of 30 inches. The Ottomans promptly began bombarding the walls of Constantinople. After almost 50 days, the walls were degraded enough for Ottoman forces to try and storm the city. On May 29, 1453, the Ottomans rushed the walls and sacked the city. Constantinople had been taken and pillaged before (the Fourth Crusade anyone?) but this time it was different. The Ottomans were there to stay, and the Byzantines no longer held any territory where they could go and wait out the invaders. Orban’s enormous cannons ended the Byzantine Empire. If Emperor Constantine had enough money, the Ottomans would never have been offered Orban’s designs, and the Byzantines might have been able to withstand this latest siege like they had dozens of times before.

March 16th 1912: Lawrence Oates dies

On this day in 1912 Lawrence Oates, a member of Robert Falcon Scott’s British team to the South Pole, left his tent never to be seen again. Scott’s Terra Nova Expedition was his second attempt and aimed to become the first group to reach the South Pole. The group succeeded in reaching the Pole on January 17th 1912, only to discover that they had been beaten by Roald Amundsen’s Norwegian expedition. Sadly, Scott’s entire party of five men died on the return journey. Oates was one of those who died first. He was suffering from severe frostbite and, in an apparent act of self-sacrifice, simply walked out of his tent into a blizzard. He had asked them to leave him behind as his condition worsened, and it is likely he felt that he was holding his group back and limiting their chances for survival. Thus on March 16th he walked out of the tent saying: "I am just going outside and may be some time." The others died soon after and their bodies were found by a search party in November, along with some of their equipment and personal effects. Oates’s body was never found, but he and his companions are remembered as brave men and national heroes.

"We knew that poor Oates was walking to his death, but though we tried to dissuade him, we knew it was the act of a brave man and an English gentleman.

- Entry in Scott’s diary about Oates
