At its peak in the mid-1300s, Cahokia was by far the largest native community in North America. Archaeologists, when they first systematically examined the city, were astonished to see how quickly the vast area became a thriving metropolis. The whole city seemed to spring to life almost overnight around 1050, a phenomenon now referred to as a “big bang.” To read more about this fascinating, and too-often-forgotten metropolis, check out my latest post at historical-nonfiction.com

mercury moves swiftly through taurus and over orion. earth moves slowly at right, and slips out of flame.
you can see mercury appear to change direction and then to brighten as it circles the sun. i assumed it was getting brighter because it was getting closer to the spacecraft, but in fact mercury is moving toward the opposite side of the sun. i guess instead it brightens as it changes phase to become more full (as it would be when stereo, the sun, and mercury were a straight line).

ageOn this day in 1849, a riot broke out at the Astor Opera House in New York City. The incident was initially sparked by a long-running dispute between two leading actors of the day - William Charles Macready and Edwin Forrest - over who was a better Shakespearean performer. However, tensions heightened as the two actors became proxies for the opposing classes in New York - the British Macready represented the upper class, and the American Forrest the lower classes. The brewing animosity came to a head on the night of May 10th when Macready’s performance of Macbeth, which had been cancelled due to protests at the first attempt, was rescheduled for. A militia company, expecting there to be violence at the rescheduled play, was stationed nearby. As predicted, violence broke out which prompted the troops to fire into the crowd, with around 25 being killed and hundreds injured. The riot is mainly remembered today for the way it pitted immigrants against nativists, a divide which was a key factor in the lead up to Civil War.

When it comes to cancer, the right screening test at the right time can go a long way toward catching the disease while it can be stopped.
But many Americans aren’t getting recommended screening tests for colorectal, breast and cervical cancer. In fact, there’s been a notable lack of progress in reaching national screening goals, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Only 72.6 percent of women between 50 and 72 said they were up to date on mammograms in 2013. The proportion of eligible women who got the breast cancer test is 8.5 percentage points short of the goal that federal public health agencies have set for 2020. And the mammogram trend is flat.
