Perihelion Approaches
This dramatic outburst from the nucleus of Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko occured on August 12, just hours before perihelion, its closest approach to the Sun. Completing an orbit of the Sun once every 6.45 years, perihelion distance for this periodic comet is about 1.3 astronomical units (AU), still outside the orbit of planet Earth (at 1 AU). The stark image of the 4 kilometer wide, double-lobed nucleus in bright sunlight and dark shadows was taken by the Rosetta spacecraft's science camera about 325 kilometers away. Too close to see the comet's growing tail, Rosetta maintains its ringside seat to watch the nucleus warm and become more active in coming weeks, as primordial ices sublimating from the surface produce jets of gas and dust. Of course, dust from the nucleus of periodic comet Swift-Tuttle, whose last perihelion passage was in 1992 at a distance of 0.96 AU, fell to Earth just this week.

O homem de 84 anos, que foi o sexto homem a pisar na superfície da Lua em 1971, sustenta que o nosso planeta tem sido visitado por extraterrestres inteligentes durante anos e que eles tem feito intervenções em assuntos em uma tentativa de evitar um apocalipse nuclear.
As ideias de Mitchell são baseadas em muitas das experiências que lhe foram comunicadas por militares e que reivindicam, entre outras coisas, terem testemunhado OVNIs sobreviando bases de mísseis durante a Guerra Fria.

Um porta-voz da NASA fez questão de distanciar a agência dos comentários de Mitchell.
“A NASA não está envolvida em qualquer tipo de acobertamento sobre vida alienígena neste planeta ou em qualquer lugar do universo”, disse ele.
“O Dr. Mitchell é um grande americano, mas não compartilhamos suas opiniões sobre esta questão.”

On this day in 1977, a unusually strong radio signal was detected by the Big Ear Radio Observatory at Ohio State University, as part of the SETI (search for extraterrestrial intelligence) project. The search for radio signals from alien civilisations began in earnest in the 1960s. In August 1977, a radio signal, originating from the direction of the constellation Sagittarius, was detected as thirty times stronger than the average signal. It appeared to be artificial, as it was only heard on one of the observatory’s fifty channels, whereas natural signals cause static on all frequencies. The anomaly thus fit the criteria for an extraterrestrial radio signal, and so shocked SETI scientist Jerry Ehman that he circled it in red ink and wrote ‘Wow!’ next to it, thus giving the signal its name. The Wow! signal only lasted seventy-two seconds, and was never heard again, despite repeated searches. There have been multiple alternatives proposed to explain the signal, but it has never been adequately understood. In 2012, National Geographic and Arecibo Observatory beamed a response comprised of Twitter and video messages from Earth to the location of the Wow! signal, in the hope of contacting alien life.
