Full independence was approved by citizens of Gambia in a 1970 referendum. On April 24th of that year, Gambia proclaimed itself a republic. Since that date, the country has had two political leaders in forty-six years. Technically both held the title “president.” But really, why even bother? No one is fooled.
Besides the fact that the Federal government had an in-place military, and in-place military suppliers, while the Confederacy had to start from scratch, and the population difference which favored the North, there was also the economic disparity. The last economic figures before the American Civil War showed that the Southern states had 18,026 “industrial establishments” which could be converted to making necessities during a war, from bullets to shoes. The Northern states had 110,274.
