Stripping ESO 137-001

Spiral galaxy ESO 137-001 hurtles through massive galaxy cluster Abell 3627 some 220 million light years away. The distant galaxy is seen in this colorful Hubble/Chandra composite image through a foreground of the Milky Way's stars toward the southern constellation Triangulum Australe. As the spiral speeds along at nearly 7 million kilometers per hour, its gas and dust are stripped away when ram pressure with the cluster's own hot, tenuous intracluster medium overcomes the galaxy's gravity. Evident in Hubble's near visible light data, bright star clusters have formed in the stripped material along the short, trailing blue streaks. Chandra's X-ray data shows off the enormous extent of the heated, stripped gas as diffuse, darker blue trails stretching over 400,000 light-years toward the bottom right. The significant loss of dust and gas will make new star formation difficult for this galaxy. A yellowish elliptical galaxy, lacking in star forming dust and gas, is just to the right of ESO 137-001 in the frame.

chaosophia218: Olber’s Paradox, or why is the Sky Dark at...

chaosophia218:

Olber’s Paradox, or why is the Sky Dark at Night?

In astrophysics and physical cosmology, Olbers’ paradox, named after the German astronomer Heinrich Wilhelm Olbers and also called the “dark night sky paradox”, is the argument that the darkness of the night sky conflicts with the assumption of an infinite and eternal static universe. The darkness of the night sky is one of the pieces of evidence for a non-static universe such as the Big Bang model. If the universe is static, homogeneous at a large scale, and populated by an infinite number of stars, any sight line from Earth must end at the (very bright) surface of a star, so the night sky should be completely bright. This contradicts the observed darkness of the night.

The paradox is that a static, infinitely old universe with an infinite number of stars distributed in an infinitely large space would be bright rather than dark. To show this, we divide the universe into a series of concentric shells, 1 light year thick. Thus, a certain number of stars will be in the shell 1,000,000,000 to 1,000,000,001 light years away. If the universe is homogeneous at a large scale, then there would be four times as many stars in a second shell between 2,000,000,000 to 2,000,000,001 light years away. However, the second shell is twice as far away, so each star in it would appear four times dimmer than the first shell. The total light received from the second shell is the same as the total light received from the first shell, so each shell of a given thickness will produce the same net amount of light regardless of how far away it is. That is, the light of each shell adds to the total amount. Thus the more shells, the more light. And with infinitely many shells there would be a bright night sky. Dark clouds could obstruct the light. But in that case the clouds would heat up, until they were as hot as stars, and then radiate the same amount of light. Kepler saw this as an argument for a finite observable universe, or at least for a finite number of stars. In general relativity theory, it is still possible for the paradox to hold in a finite universe: though the sky would not be infinitely bright, every point in the sky would still be like the surface of a star.

The earliest recorded use of fireworks dates back to 200 BCE in China during the Han Dynasty. People would roast bamboo stalks until the air inside would sizzle and explode. The resulting loud “pop” was believed to frighten evil spirits and usher in happiness and luck with the new year.

Warning: graphic footage, viewer discretion advised. This is the full raw body cam footage of the murder of Sam Dubose by University of Cincinnati Police Officer Ray Tensing. This includes Tinsing speaking to other officers after the shooting. Dubose was originally stopped for not having a front license plate. Officer Tinsing claimed that Dubose had run him over and was dragging him with his car, which is clearly not the case in the video. Tinsing was indicted by a grand jury on murder charges today (July 29). Stay woke and stay in the know.

Meet the 17-Year-Old Founder of Malaria Free World

Malaria Free World

Kritika Singh is a force. Of all the people I’ve met in the anti-malaria sector she is the one that most inspires me. At just 17-years-old she’s the founder of Malaria Free World, a 501©(3) dedicated to supporting malaria eradication efforts and raising awareness about malaria, particularly within the often neglected arena of today’s youth. Kritika is at once able to find ways of relating…

Doctors Support Lower Cancer Drug Prices

According to the National Cancer Institute, in this year alone, an estimated 1,658,370 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the United States. As the population keeps aging, that number will continue to grow. Pharmaceutical and biotech companies are developing new therapies faster than ever before but the prices of these drugs keep rising.

In a paper published in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings earlier this month, three University of California, San Diego School of Medicine School of Medicine and Moores Cancer Center oncologists, John Adamson, MD, Thomas Kipps, MD, PhD, and Scott Lippman, MD, along with dozens of other physicians signed their names in support of lower prices for cancer drugs.

According to the authors, cancer drug prices have increased by an average of $8,500 per year over the past 15 years. Last year, the cost of all new US Food and Drug Administration approved therapies were priced at more than $120,000 per year of use. The costs are unaffordable for most people who have out-of-pocket expenses or no medical coverage at all.

The authors say that 10 to 20 percent of patients with cancer do not take their drugs as prescribed or don’t use them at all because of cost. If nearly 40 percent of the population is expected to be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lifetimes, it is easy to see that many people will not be able to afford life-saving therapies when the average annual household income is $52,000.

To help alleviate the problem, the authors’ suggest that the government make changes to the approval process of new treatments, allow Medicare to negotiate drug prices, consider prices when designing treatment guidelines and allow importation of cancer drugs for personal use. There are a lot of organizations that need to be involved to lower cancer drug prices including a cancer patient-based grassroots movement.

The Slavery Abolition Act

William Wilberforce (1759 - 1833)

Olaudah Equiano (c.1745 - 1797)

August 1st 1834: Britain abolishes slavery

On this day in 1834, slavery was abolished in the British Empire as the 1833 Slavery Abolition Act came into force. Britain had dominated the Atlantic slave trade for hundreds of years, with millions of people being forcibly taken from Africa to the Americas while businessmen in Britain profited from their plight. The campaign for abolition began in the late eighteenth century, countering claims that slaves were content with the brutal reality of life aboard a slave ship and toiling in a plantation. One of the primary actors in the movement to abolish the slave trade was freed slave Olaudah Equiano, whose eloquent autobiography articulated the horrors of slavery. The slave trade was thus banned in 1807, and this was enforced by the British navy on the West African coast, but the practice continued and captains would throw slaves overboard to avoid fines. The Anti-Slavery Society was formed in 1823 to campaign for the complete abolition of slavery in the British Empire, led by the politician William Wilberforce. The abolition movement was partly fueled by humanitarian concern, but also changing economic interests, as the newly industrial Britain no longer relied on slave-based goods, and slave rebellions in Haiti and Jamaica indicated that slavery was becoming unprofitable. The 1833 act was passed by the House of Commons and the House of Lords, before receiving Royal Assent from King William IV in August; Wilberforce died three days after hearing that the bill would pass. Due to come into effect a year later, it provided for the eventual emancipation of slaves in the British Empire (they were to become ‘apprentices’ for six years before freedom), while providing £20 million (nearly £70 billion in modern currency) in compensation for slaveowners. Whilst this act ostensibly ended slavery, it did not completely eradicate the practice, as some areas of the British Empire were initially exempt and others continued to secretly sell slaves throughout the nineteenth century.

Pai Nosso...
Ave Maria....
Glória ao Pai...
