M104: The Sombrero Galaxy
The striking spiral galaxy M104 is famous for its nearly edge-on profile featuring a broad ring of obscuring dust lanes. Seen in silhouette against an extensive bulge of stars, the swath of cosmic dust lends a broad brimmed hat-like appearance to the galaxy suggesting the more popular moniker, The Sombrero Galaxy. Hubble Space Telescope and ground-based Subaru data have been reprocessed with amateur color image data to create this sharp view of the well-known galaxy. The processing results in a natural color appearance and preserves details often lost in overwhelming glare of M104's bright central bulge when viewed with smaller ground-based instruments. Also known as NGC 4594, the Sombrero galaxy can be seen across the spectrum and is thought to host a central supermassive black hole. About 50,000 light-years across and 28 million light-years away, M104 is one of the largest galaxies at the southern edge of the Virgo Galaxy Cluster.

On this day in 1788 the future Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Robert Peel, was born. Peel was born in Bury, Lancashire to a prominent family. Peel’s father was a famous industrialist and Member of Parliament. The young Robert received an exceptional education at Oxford University, and entered politics at the young age of twenty-one in 1809. His political career took off quickly, and Peel became Home Secretary in 1822, when he was thirty-four years old. Peel served as Home Secretary for the duration of the ‘liberal’ government of Lord Liverpool, which lasted until 1827. In this capacity, Peel left his greatest legacy, as he established the Metropolitan Police Force for London in 1829. This essentially set the stage for the creation of the modern police force, and police officers in Britain and still refered to as ‘bobbies’ and ‘peelers’ in memory of Peel. Robert Peel became British Prime Minister in 1834, and again in 1841. As Prime Minister, Peel is best known for his repeal of the Corn Laws and issuing of the Tamworth Manifesto which led to the formation of the modern Conservative Party. Peel died in Westminster in 1850 aged 62, and remains one of the most famous Prime Ministers in British history.

Forty-Four Years Ago Today: Apollo 14 Touches Down on the Moon
On Feb. 5. 1971, the Apollo 14 crew module landed on the moon. The crew members were Captain Alan Bartlett Shepard, Jr. (USN), commander; Major Stuart Allen Roosa (USAF), command module pilot; and Commander Edgar Dean Mitchell (USN), lunar module pilot. In this photo, Shepard stands by the Modular Equipment Transporter (MET). The MET was a cart for carrying around tools, cameras and sample cases on the lunar surface. Shepard can be identified by the vertical stripe on his helmet. After Apollo 13, the commander's spacesuit had red stripes on the helmet, arms, and one leg, to help identify them in photographs. Okay, I get that the “face” of the anti-vaxxer movement is the crazy mom that refuses to vaccinate her kids because ~chemicals~ but why couldn’t they have pictured one of the many male scientists that published false studies about the “dangers” of vaccines?
When I was pregnant, I was targeted by the anti-vax movement, who used guilt and false facts to try to sway me not to vaccinate. Thankfully, I found the truth before my son was born and he is up-to-date, but I have never seen folks talk about that vulnerable young mother who is trying to protect her children, who anti-vaxxers specifically seek out and unload their propaganda on.
I’m not defending mothers who don’t vaccinate their kids, but there is an insidious agenda that’s happening and I haven’t seen anyone talking about it yet.
