The Great Gig in the Sky

There were no crowds on the beach at Phillips Lake, Oregon on August 21. But a few had come there to stand, for a moment, in the dark shadow of the Moon. From the beach, this unscripted mosaic photo records their much anticipated solar eclipse. In two vertical panels it catches the last few seconds of totality and the first instant of 3rd contact, just as the eclipse ends and sunlight faintly returns. Across the US those gathered along the path of totality also took pictures and shared their moment. And like those at Phillips Lake they may treasure the experience more than any planned or unplanned photograph of the total eclipse of the Sun.

Maria Santíssima, Virgem Mãe de Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo, venho ajoelhar-me perante vós arrependido dos meus muitos pecados, implorando-vos, intercedais, junto ao vosso Divino Filho, pelo perdão das minhas grandes faltas.
Senhora das Dores, que tivestes vosso puro coração transpassado por Sete Espadas, consolação dos aflitos, protetora dos fracos e oprimidos, vinde em meu auxílio, nesta aflição.
Compadecei-vos de mim, Senhora. Considerai o meu sofrimento. Suplicante, eu vos peço ( Faça aqui neste instante a sua necessidade) pelo sangue de Nosso Amantíssimo Jesus, derramado na cruz para a nossa salvação.

A Oração esquecida de São Miguel Arcanjo

No Ano de 1884 o Papa XIII escreveu a Oração de São Miguel, após ter tido uma visão terrível, onde forças diabólicas estava prestes a serem soltas na terra.
Ele ordenou que esta oração fosse recitada sempre depois de todas as missas  rezadas em latim.
A oração tornou-se parte das missas em latim até a década  de 1960 , quando a reforma litúrgica promovida pela igreja, retirou esta e outras orações , chamadas de “Orações Leoninas” dos ritos.
Ela passou anos esquecida até que em 1994, o Papa João Paulo II  pediu que os fiéis voltassem a recitar esta oração como defesa do mal.
Ela não voltou a ser recitada ao fim das missas mas voltou a ser considerada e lembrada pela igreja.

A Oração original em Latim:

Sancte Michael Archangele, defende nos in proelio, contra nequitiam et insidias diaboli esto praesidium. Imperet illi Deus, supplices deprecamur: tuque, Princeps militiae caelestis, Satanam aliosque spiritus malignos, qui ad perditionem animarum pervagantur in mundo, divina virtute, in infernum detrude. Amen.

You may have heard of Krakatoa, a giant volcanic explosion which caused the year without a summer. But did you know something equally giant happened in 536 CE? A vast cloud of dust darkened the sky, likely caused by a combination of cataclysms such as comets or meteorites, plus at least one volcanic eruption. Whatever happened caused lower summer temperatures in the northern hemisphere for the next fourteen years!

The added cold and darkness devastated Scandanavia. In the Uppland region, for instance, we know nearly 75% of villages were abandoned during this period. And the legend of Ragnarok may have been inspired, or embellished, during this period; the end of the world is supposed to start with Fimbulwinter, a deadly time when the sun turns black and the weather bitter and changeable – just like the harsh years after 536 CE. 

Scholars note that when Scandanavian society eventually rebounded, their culture was much more war-centered, with men and women alike celebrating the virtues of fearlessness, aggression, and physical prowess. Local rulers were constantly seizing and defending abandoned territory, fighting for good farmland and good fishing territory. Graves are suddenly filled with weapons and shields. A militarized society arose, which would one day be known and feared across the continent.
