A motorcyclist from a young age, Debbie Lawler became known as the Flying Angel, and toured as a stunt jumper starting in 1972 at age 20. “The crowd expects to see a 300-pound woman with tattoo and a chain hanging down her back,” she said, “They don’t expect me.”
In 1974, on a live national broadcast, she broke stunt-king Evel Knievel’s indoor vehicular record by jumping sixteen Chevy pickups. Knievel said “I can spit farther than that” and reclaimed the record next month clearing thirteen semitrailer trucks. But Lawler was already a sensation, appearing on a TV game show, in a print add for tires, and getting her own action figure line.
