In the 400s BCE, an ancient Babylonian scholar named Nabu-rimanni made a series of tables which predicted the movement of the moon, the sun, and the planets (that they knew about at the time). The tables were based on centuries of Mesopotamian observations of the heavens. It was a scientific endeavor but done for very un-scientific reasons.
