Monolatry

In this conception of God, multiple gods do exist but the believer should only worship one of these gods. Monolatry is somewhat common among tribal communities in African, Pacific, and Native American societies. Many Hindu believers are considered monolatrists. The Jewish scriptures seem to tacitly endorse monolatry as well, since the Torah mentions the existence of foreign gods worshiped by non-Hebrew peoples such as Baal, Astarte, Milcom, Chemosh, and Molech.

Monolatry can be seen as a progression from polytheism, the worship of multiple gods, through henotheism, the worship of multiple gods with one supreme god. It is the logical step before monotheism, which only believes in the existence of a single deity. The term “monolatry” itself comes from combining the Greek monos, “one,” with latreia, “worship.”
