Chimps Find Way to Get Drunk – Caught On Camera
It can be a jungle out there, and sometimes an ape just needs a drink. Chimpanzees in West Africa use leaves to drink a palm wine – and occasionally even get a bit drunk, according to long-term research in the field published this week.
The 17-year study observed wild chimps at Bossou in Guinea, use leaves to find a way to drink alcoholic sap from a plant, and do it habitually, according to findings of an international scientific team from Japan, the U.S., Portugal and Great Britain.
Local people in the West African nation tap raffia palm plants, collecting the sap constantly in plastic containers that ferments round-the-clock, according to the study, published by the Royal Society Open Science journal. But the people don’t guard their sap. While the people are away, the chimps slip in, and use a leafy tool like a scoop to drink the ethanol-containing juice out of the containers, according to the study.
