this is only a small part of the milky way galaxy, seen where is crosses the plane in which earth orbits the sun. the bright areas are masses of stars; the dark areas are clouds of dust obscuring them.
below centre, hidden in one such cloud, is Sgr A*, an extremely intense radio source believed to be the supermassive black hole at the cenre of our galaxy.
