10 frames, centred on 15°s 5°w; the eastern shore of the mare nubium (the sea of clouds). the larged peaked crater at right is alphonsus; the smaller one below and right is alpetragius.
the ranger probes were lunar impactors which transmitted photographs during their descent to the surface. ranger 9 crashed inside alphonsus crater 4 minutes after the last image in this sequence was taken.
