Was the Constitution the Culmination or Repudiation of the American Revolution?

John Adams thought that the federal government was necessary to complete the American Revolution. He supported a strong, centralized government more powerful than the states.

Thomas Jefferson thought the federal government rejected the principles for which the revolution was fought. He believed that the states should control everything except foreign diplomacy.

Jefferson’s political thought died only with the death of the Confederacy, which is ironic because Abraham Lincoln hero-worshiped Jefferson and used his Declaration of Independence to explain why slaves were incompatible with the American values of the founders.
