Conditioned Emotional Reactions by John B. Watson and Rosalie Rayner is one of the most influential, infamous and iconic research articles ever published in the history of psychology. Commonly referred to as “The Case of Little Albert” this psychology classic attempted to show how fear could be induced in an infant through classical conditioning. Originally published in 1920, Conditioned Emotional Reactions remains among the most frequently cited journal articles in introductory psychology courses and textbooks. #psychology

On this day in psychology (31st October, 1905)

Harry Harlow was born. A pioneer in the field of comparative psychology, Harlow is recognized as one the most eminent psychologists of the 20th Century.

Harlow’s groundbreaking research on primate behavior included pioneering studies on perceptual discrimination, learning sets (how animals learn to learn,) intelligence and memory decay. However, he is best known for the wire based cloth covered ‘surrogate mothers’ he developed and used as part of his controversial experiments on love and isolation effects among infant rhesus monkeys; which found that attachment to surrogate mothers was driven by the need for “contact comfort” as much as it was by the need for food.

Harry Harlow was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1951 and elected president of the American Psychological Association in 1958. In 1960 he received the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award for 'curiosity and imagination which opened up new areas of research in animal behavior and enhanced the position of comparative psychology,’ and in 1967 President Lyndon B. Johnson presented Harlow with the National Medal of Science.

On this in psychology (1938)

A radio adaptation of the H.G. Wells alien invasion classic ‘The War of the Worlds’ was broadcast across the United States. The dramatization was so realistic it was said to have caused widespread panic due to people thinking that they were listening to a real live news report. The following day, The New York Times reported that 'A wave of mass hysteria seized thousands of radio listeners between 8:15 and 9:30 o’clock last night.’

What became known as 'the most famous radio show of all time’ was the focus of Hadley Cantril’s book 'The Invasion from Mars: A Study in the Psychology of Panic’ first published in 1940, in which he states that at least six million people heard the broadcast, of whom around a million were frightened or disturbed.

Contemporary analysis of the events following the broadcast; however, suggest that levels of panic and hysteria were nothing like as pervasive as reported at the time.

What is protecting this Buddha?

That’s a naga! Shortly after attaining enlightenment, the Buddha Shakyamuni was sheltered from the rain by a serpent known as a “naga.” This multi-headed hooded cobra represented, for the Cambodians, the spirit of the irrigating rivers and canals as well as a rainbow-bridge to heaven.

An Old Play, A New Find

John Fletcher, a house playwright for the theater group the King’s Men, wrote a play with Williams Shakespeare entitled The Two Noble Kinsmen. The play is based on Geoffrey Chaucer’s fourteenth-century poem The Knight’s Tale, and is believed to have been written around 1613 or 1614. That would make it one of Shakespeare’s last works before he died in 1616, if not his last.

A 1634 printing of The Two Noble Kinsmen, still in its original leather binding, has recently been found in a Spanish university, the Royal Scots College. The Two Noble Kinsmen was included in a volume made up of several English plays printed from 1630 to 1635. In the 1600s and 1700s, collections of books in English were rare in Spain, because of censorship by the church. But the Scots college had special authorization to import whatever they wanted. And what they wanted, apparently, were plays!

Helena Aalto and Elli Vuokko, Finnish Red Guards from the Finnish civil war. A 15-week civil war, it was fought between Communist Reds and democratic, anti-communist Whites, and it ended with German intervention and an independent, democratic Finland.

The first Women’s Guards units formed in early February in the main Finnish cities. More than 15 female Guards units were established by the end of March 1918, with a total of about 2,000 women serving. The Women’s Guards were the focus of propaganda by the anti-communist White party. And their own commanders were ambivalent about women serving: they were usually held in reserve and not put into direct combat situations. But as the war continued, and the situation became more desperate, some Women’s Guards units saw combat.

Study of Horse Domestication in Anatolia Looks at Genes

An international team of researchers recently analyzed the genomes of horses who lived in Anatolia and the Caucasus between 9000 and 500 BCE. They were looking for evidence about hose domestication. Specifically, they looked at the animals’ mitochondrial DNA, Y-chromosomes, and DNA markers linked to coat color.

The results suggested genetic patterns associated with domestication appeared suddenly in the Anatolian horses around 2000 BCE. But if horses had been domesticated in Anatolia, as has been theorized, the traits would have been acquired gradually. The imported horses then bred with local wild Anatolian horses and donkeys, producing mules between 1100 and 800 BCE.

When Women Weren‘t Persons

In 1928, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that women were not “persons” according to the British North America Act and therefore were ineligible for appointment to the Senate. To overturn this, the Canadian woman in question appealed to the Privy Council of England. At the time it was Canada’s highest appeals court.

In 1929, the Privy Council ruled that women are, indeed, “persons,” opening up the Canadian legislature for women as well as preventing narrow readings of laws that read “person” instead of “citizen” or “human.”

The First Japanese Cats May Have Been Royal

No one is quite sure how cats arrived in Japan. The most supported hypotheses are that they traveled down the silk road from Egypt to China and Korea, and eventually made the hop to Japan. Why they came across also is debated. They may have come as ratters guarding precious Buddhist sutras written on vellum, or as expensive gifts traded between emperors. They may have been both, at different times.

The first evidence that cats were definitely in Japan come from the diary of 17-year-old Emperor Uda on March 11, 889 CE:

On the 6th Day of the 2nd Month of the First Year of the Kampo era. Taking a moment of my free time, I wish to express my joy of the cat. It arrived by boat as a gift to the late Emperor, received from the hands of Minamoto no Kuwashi.

The color of the fur is peerless. None could find the words to describe it, although one said it was reminiscent of the deepest ink. It has an air about it, similar to Kanno. Its length is 5 sun, and its height is 6 sun. I affixed a bow about its neck, but it did not remain for long.

In rebellion, it narrows its eyes and extends its needles. It shows its back.

When it lies down, it curls in a circle like a coin. You cannot see its feet. It’s as if it were circular Bi disk. When it stands, its cry expresses profound loneliness, like a black dragon floating above the clouds.

By nature, it likes to stalk birds. It lowers its head and works its tail. It can extend its spine to raise its height by at least 2 sun. Its color allows it to disappear at night. I am convinced it is superior to all other cats.”

Slave Ship Identified Off Mexican Coast

Researchers have identified the wreckage of a paddle-wheel steamboat (discovered in 2017) as the remains of La Unin. It was once used to carry Maya people to Cuba to work in sugarcane fields there, before La Unin sank near the Yucatan port of Sisal in 1861. Although slavery was illegal in Mexico, the operators of La Unin and similar vessels are thought to have purchased Mayas who were captured as combatants or left landless during the rebellion known as the War of the Castes, which took place from 1847 to 1901. It is unknown if it was carrying enslaved Mayas during its final voyage.

The ship was identified thanks to oral history, according to lead researcher Helena Barba Meinecke: “One of the people in Sisal who saw how they led the Mayas away as slaves, told his son and then he told his grandson, and it was that person who led us to the general area of the shipwreck.”

The Unstoppable Race

Yorkshir has a 4-mile horse race called the Kiplingcotes Derby which has been held every year since 1519. That makes it the oldest annual horse race in England.

According to the ancient rules, if the race ever fails to take place, it must never be run again, so the Derby’s organizers have always been careful to have at least an attempt at a race every year. In 1947 (harsh winter), 2001 (foot-and-mouth disease crisis), and 2018 (heavy rain), the race was functionally canceled but a single horse was led around the course to keep the tradition alive.

The World Cup Champions Curse

The FIFA World Cup, the highest honor of its sport, is cursed. But don’t feel too bad. The curse only happens once a team has already won the cup. Since 1998, six out of seven defending champions returned for the next tournament and were knocked out in the first round.

In 1994 the US won the tournament. But at the next cup in 1998, the US was out in the first round and France won the cup. Then in 2002, France was out in the first round and Brazil won the cup. Seeing a pattern?

Brazil managed to stay in till the quarterfinals in 2006, but Italy won the tournament. In 2010, Italy was out in the first round and Spain won the cup. In 2014, Spain was out in the first round and Germany won the cup. In 2018, Germany was out in the first round and France won again. France better be worried for 2022.
