Learie Constantine was a world-class cricketeer from Trinidad before World War II. In his post-sports career he served as Trinidad’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and he was influential in the passing of the 1965 Race Relations Act in Britain.  This was the first law to address racial discrimination in the country. It specifically outlawed discrimination on the “grounds of colour, race, or ethnic or national origins” in public places.

Constantine was knighted in 1962, then given a lifetime peerage in 1969, making Constantine the United Kingdom’s first black peer.
