The first skyscraper ever constructed was Chicago’s 13-story Tacoma Building, built in 1889. It was the first building supported by a riveted steel frame instead of by the walls of the structure. This is hallmark of modern skyscrapers through today.
Others argue that Chicago’s 10-story Home Insurance Company building, built in 1885, was the first skyscraper. It didn’t have a steel frame inside the building, but a fireproof metal skeleton outside the building.
Either way, Chicago gets to say the first skyscraper in the world was built in Chicago.
