When it was introduced in the early 1900s, Dämmerschlaf, or ‘twilight sleep’, was hailed as the dawning of “a new era for woman and through her for the whole human race.” The treatment was given to women in labor, to prevent pain. And physicians claimed it worked perfectly! In reality, twilight sleep just prevented people from creating memories. So the women really stayed awake, and in terrible and visible pain, the entire time. But as soon as the twilight sleep wore off, the women couldn’t remember anything that had happened. So physicians described the labor as “painless!”
Twilight sleep was very effective at preventing memory creation, though: after the effects wore off, many asked when they were due to start labor. Most didn’t even realize they’d just given birth!
