When John Milton was writing Paradise Lost in the 1600s, the English language was a lot more fluid than it is today and this gave the blind writer more freedom to create new words. As a result, Milton is credited with introducing 630 different words into the English language.
Many of them have gone out of fashion. Have you ever heard of “ensanguined” and “horrent?” But Milton did introduce some words that are still common today. One of the most famous is the word pandemonium, which is the capital of Hell in Paradise Lost. He also came up with the word terrific, but Milton meant “terrifying” which eventually transmuted into “thrilling.” Other major everyday words that Milton introduced are fragrance, enjoyable, space (as in outer space), unoriginal, lovelorn, and many more.
