Chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele discovered or identified oxygen, molybdenum, tungsten, barium, hydrogen and chlorine. He greatly advanced science. However, he died young and his discoveries were cut short. Why?
- Scheele was shot in a duel over his mistress
- He ate raw chicken, which he swore kept his mind active and vigorous. Unfortunately, the raw meat gave him frequent food poisoning and he eventually died from a particularly bad chicken
- Scheele liked to smell and taste the chemicals he worked with
- His laboratory blew up
Chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele died young, because he was so eager to learn about the chemicals he studied, that he tasted and smelled them all the time.
Of course, we now know that tasting and smelling chemicals is bad for you. Poor Scheele did not – and died because of it.
