The city of Prague’s skyline is dominated by Prague Castle and the fortifications around it. There has been some kind of fort on this site since 870 CE and over the centuries new buildings have been added and extensive renovations and improvements have taken place. The Old Royal Palace as it looks today was built in two main periods in the 1300s and 1400s in the Gothic style. The palace, besides being a home to royalty, was also there to impress guests. Large halls were used for banquets, and official functions like coronations. Nothing says “I have power” like a really fancy house!
