Two marine fossils dating to the Triassic period more than 200 million years ago are the center of a small controversy. One is a 220-million-year-old Saurichthys (above), a predatory fish with a long snout, and the other is a 250-million-year-old fossil of an Ichthyosaur, a dolphin-like reptile that also featured a long snout and big eyes. They were smuggled out of China post-2000. It’s not clear how they got to Canada, but that was where their journey ended. The Saurichthys was intercepted by border control, and – this is true – the Ichthyosaur was found by Mounties! Canada’s heritage department has announced that the fossils are on the move again, this time heading home to China.
