This is a newly-discovered drawing by Leonardo da Vinci. The story is surprisingly simple: a man walked into a French auction house, with 14 unframed drawings that had been collected by his bibliophile father. Flipping through them, one in particular surprises the auctioneer. It is a vigorous pen-and-ink study of St. Sebastian tied to a tree, inscribed on the mount “Michelange” (Michelangelo). And on the back, there are two smaller scientific drawings. These diagrammatic studies of candlelight were accompanied by notes written in a minute, Italian Renaissance right-to-left hand. The auctioneer is stunned. Second and third opinions confirm his guess: this is a Leonardo da Vinci. As a preliminary value, the French auction house guesses the work could fetch around 15 million euros, or about USD $15.8 million.
