A mural from the tomb of Li Xian depicting Korean ambassadors visiting the court of Tang China. 706 CE. Korea and China had exchanged monks, scholars, and diplomats since the 400s BCE during the Warring States period. As the dominant culture in the region, though, Chinese culture spread to the Korean peninsula – not the other way around. Koreans adopted Chinese characters to suit their language, developed Korean-style Buddhism after the religion spread from China, and sent tribute to the Chinese emperor. Koreans were viewed as lesser, figuratively and literally. Just look at how ugly their ambassadors are according to the Chinese artists.
