Libreville is the capital and largest city of Gabon. It was initially settled by fifty-two people rescued from slavery. They were prisoners on an illegal slave trading ship which was captured by the French navy off the coast in 1849. They settled in an an area provided by the French government, and gave the city its name: Libreville means “Free Town” in French.
