A Korean female shaman doing her work. Shamanism, called in Korean misin or ‘superstition,’ was widely practiced in Korea from prehistoric times right up to the modern era. Self-appointed practitioners promised to contact and influence the spirit world in order to assist the living, with some animism (belief that things in nature have spirits) as well. A female shaman was a mudang, a male shaman was a paksu or pansu. Female shamans were much more common than male shamans, as it was one of four professions open to women.
