The Maori committed infanticide, like many other warrior cultures. Females were more likely to be killed because tribes needed a higher number of males than females. This was because every male was a warrior and there needed to be an acceptable amount of warriors to ensure the security of the tribe. Also, males were more likely to be killed in battle, upsetting the sex ratios later on in life. Having a higher number of males from infancy helped keep male deaths in battle from becoming too much of an issue. Infanticide was also common if there was anything wrong with the baby.
