Neanderthals were once presumed to be scavengers, eating the undesirable bits of dead animals after the beast that killed was gone. But animal protein has been shown to make up the majority of their protein. Neanderthals were eating the most desirable and nutritionally valuable parts of animals, meaning they were making the kills – more like apex predators than scavengers. But we also have evidence that Neanderthals ate cooked vegetables. And we know they made and used tools They were therefore not likely eating raw meat and vegetables, but gathered and ate food which they cooked. Who knows? Maybe next we will learn what kinds of herbs the Neanderthals preferred, to season those cooked meals!
