Chilpak Dakhma: an artificial tower known as the Tower of Silence. According to Zoroastrian belief, the sacred elements of earth, fire, air, and water must not be polluted. So the dead are left exposed, until scavengers completely deflesh them. The bones were gathered and placed in special ossuaries. Chilpak Dakhma was built by the Zoroastrians who dominated the western steppes in Uzbekistan before the coming of the Arabs in the 700s CE.
